Trying IPTV on Plex with xTeVe - Worth the effort to edit M3U / EPG?

by fantasyfootall1234

I have a paid subscription with an M3U and EPG/XMLTV file. The Service comes with thousands of channels, and i'm really only interested in maybe 1%. Rather than have to scroll through all these channels in my guide, I want to slim down the list and remove/hide all the channels that i dont want. My ideal setup is the list of channels i want, with a perfectly in sync guide and all the channel logos.

I have played with https://xtream-editor.com/ and https://m3u4u.com/ to slim down the M3U channel list, and it seems easy enough.

However, i have a few questions:

  1. If I re-arrange channel groups/categories and/or rename the channel entirely, will it be able to sync with the IPTV provider and update the stream URL if needed? For example if i move "CA: B CNN HD" to a new folder called "News" and rename it to "CNN", will this break the match with the provider and therefore the stream URL will never update?

  2. After I use one of those site to edit the M3U, should I now stop using my stream's EPG and instead the xtream's or m3u4's EPG URL?

  3. For some channels, there is no guide data or channel logo from my IPTV provider. Would it be worth it to add something like https://epg.best into the mix?

Basically, i'm wondering if this makes sense or if i'm overcomplicating everything:

IPTV Source, connected to M3U editing website to customize the channel list, which is then connected to EPG.best to correct the guide data and channel logos, which is then finally connected to Plex (or even an android box) for viewing.

I don't use xtream editor so I cannot comment on that tool. I do use M3U4U and use the tool to rename/hide channels/groups, set EPG and set logos.

  1. I think the normal practice providers use is if the stream URL changes then they name the channel differently .i.e. "CA: C CNN HD". From M3U4U's perspective it is a new channel different from "CA: B CNN HD". I recommend asking this question in M3U4U's support group (Discord group).
  2. The choice is yours. I use Tivimate Premium (highly recommended) which allows you to set 2 EPG sources per m3u playlist. I set the primary EPG to my M3U4U's personalized EPG link and the secondary EPG to yet another free third-party EPG. I don't use my provider's EPG.
  3. M3U4U has a decent EPG guide. In addition, their wiki also explains how to use the free third-party EPG that I mentioned above. M3U4U also has a decent set if built-in logos. A more comprehensive set is at https://github.com/Tapiosinn/tv-logos . You can even use wikipedia. For example for channel "[IE] LEAGUE OF IRELAND 02", I set the logo URL in M3U4U to be https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1f/League_of_Ireland_logo.png

I hope this helps.
