Question: will Shield Pro get updated?

by Bluebuddyman

I was looking at the specs for the Shield Pro (I’m hoping to run a Plex Server). When was the last time the hardware was upgraded? The reviews look great as far as viewing streams. My concern is running the Plex Server at the same time someone is streaming/watching iptv, Hulu, etc even if on a wired connection but say streaming a Plex movie to an outside connection. This question/topic is only about the Shield Pro. Does anyone else have experience on this hypothetical?

If your Plex clients can use direct play, the Plex server hardly has to do anything. Do you have enough bandwidth and proper clients for direct play?

The 2019 model is hardly any different to the 2015 model in terms of specs.

The X1 does all three nintendo switches and the 2015 and 2017 shield

The X2 isn't terribly much faster all and all

Their last SoC on the Tegra line was release December 2019...but it also runs at a pretty high wattage(65 watts).

Its hard to say if and when they'll come out with something new.

The X1 chip does have quite a bit of power behind it still for 15watts. Solid little quad core ARM chip.

I run it with access from a couple of people and routinely have simultaneous transcode/a direct play or any other streaming service with no problems at all.

I've been running Plex for years. Start with an old PC, Install Linux (I started on Ubuntu because is was easy at the time) and don't look back. You don't NEED state of the art hardware to run Plex on Linux and it is the most stable platform. There is a GREAT guide to get started on a plex media server with automated content addition using Sonarr and Radarr in Docker. You can basically cut and paste the Docker Compose file sections (do them one at a time though to make troubleshooting easier if you have a problem).

I set my first Docker based server in less than 2 hours using this guide on a retired PC I had. It is still in service now.

I have two Shields in service as clients. The pro is on my main tv and a tube in the bedroom. They are the BEST clients I have used. For IPTV I installed Tivimate (I bought the lifetime premium it is worth every penny).

The Shield Pro and Regular model were both just upgraded this year with newest Tegra engine and the AI Upscaling feature. It's a great box but not for the price. If you want to run PLEX buy the MINIX-NEO UN22XJ or the BEELINK GT KING PRO or the little NVidea development board ( Jetson Series ) IF Money is no object then buy the Zidoo Z1000 Media Center or the killer UHD2000 which holds 2 - 10TB HDD's , 3.5" or 2.5" and it has an ELITE version of PLEX already installed and licensed by Ziddo specifically. I have their Z20 Pro model with 2 4TB drives in it. Retail is $959. wholesale was $575 .. check them out at zidoo dot tv well thats my 2 cents AND the Premium version of newest TiviMate has no rival for IPTV player.
