How does catch-up work?

by matthewcouto

More and more providers are offering catch-up, where you can view a program that aired within a short amount of time, usually 2-7 days. How does this work? Are these channels just being recorded 24/7 and automatically uploaded to the interwebz?

Catchup channels are recorded 24/7, and the recordings are retained for whatever the specified time is. The recordings are just stored on a server that your account for live also gives you access to. It's not really an "automatic upload", the server doing the recording is likely where the recordings are then hosted, and the upload probably only happens when a certain program is requested by a user.

My understanding is that catch ups are indeed recorded material sitting on a server somewhere. However contrary to what you believe my understanding is that more and more providers are removing catch up because at that point the catch up content is much the same as movies on a server. And making that kind of content available constitutes a violation for which many providers are being shut down.
