High Jitter value and freezing problem.

by blablaalb

My IPTV box is wirelessly connected to the network with a WIFI router. It periodically has lagging/freezing problems. The channels would stop playing for a few seconds, then after a few seconds stream resumes, then stops again, and so forth. It usually starts in the evening, lasts for few hours, and then fixes itself.

So, I check the network connection from the IPTV box, and it had 20mb/s upload and download speed, 3ms ping, and 158ms jitter. I called the IPTV supplier, explained the situation told him the values, and said that the jitter is very high. The service provider throughout our whole conversation was insisting that the problem is not from their side and it can be resolved if I plug the box into the router with an ethernet cable. Since I don't have a spare LAN cable I can order one from them.

So my question is: Was the service provider honest and the problem may lie in the WIFI connection? I highly doubt it because if the WIFI router was bad, it would have had constant freezing problems, but it usually starts in the evening and lasts for several hours. Also, if I switch from the channels to the YouTube application the YouTube plays without any issue.

20MB is not enough for stable IPTV. It is the medium value, which means that your actual internet connection fluctuates from 15MB to 25MB. That is why you are getting the poor IPTV performance you are getting. Your provider is right, plugging in directly into the router with an ethernet cable will give you more stability. However, your best bet is to go a level up with your internet provider and get a 100MB type connection. It'll be worth the extra $10 or so to get crisp and stable IPTV performance.

OK so your IPTV provider is right the problem is on your end… just because YouTube plays without a problem doesn’t mean The IPTV service is the problem…. You also got understand that YouTube is a billion company that have phenomenal servers and as for a IPTV services they might have OK servers…. When it comes to IPTV you what the fastest Internet speeds that you can get… Another factor is the device that you are using and how you have it set up, so the best thing you can do is hardwire your device to your router because it will give you a more consistent and reliable connection… make sure you do maintenance on your device regularly, cause the more space you have on your device the better off it’s going to run… you also mentioned that the problem happens in the evening , so if that’s the case then your ISP Is slowing you down because of the high usage in your area…. Now just because you hardwire it doesn’t mean it’s going to fix the problem.. Have you tried a VPN, because it could just be that your ISP is just throttling the shit out of you..

Yep, welcome to IPTV. The freezing & buffering is just going to happen in a lot of cases. Drives me nuts, but the price is right.

I can certainly agree with everyone else. Here's my take on it.

20mbps I've seen work but it does tend to cause some buffering/lagging. What's causing the issue is the amount of WiFi networks around you. Using a Wifi Analyzer app from Google Play or Apple App store might help. You'll have to play around with the channels and find one that most people are not on.

This for me helped reduce the "jitter." Jitter is your wifi fighting with others for airspace - causing you to buffer.

Albeit, purchasing a faster connection will keep more buffered when there is a battle with other Wifi connections going on so you should see a reduction.

By going wired, you eliminate all competition for your connection.

Listen to everyone on here and hardwire your box. 20mbps is not enough for wifi connection with iptv. Wifi dips. Plus you probably don't even have 20mbps download as it also depends on how many other devices are connected to your WiFi. Most people seem to forget that 🤣😂🤣. Somebody in the next room watching YouTube on their phone will leave you with much less wifi download speeds. Hardwiring your box gives you a constant speed. Anything over 40mbps you will usually get away with buffer free through wifi (this is with no other device connected). However, anything lower needs to be hardwired.
