My provider requires us to use a vpn, he says, its the protect the servers from being shut down.
I'm not clued up on how the back end works. Is it true that if a customer doesn't use a vpn it could lear to the server/service being shut down
I must add, the service i receive from my provider is really good.
Never had a provider require a VPN.
Vpn will only hide the fact that you are connecting to their servers. It won't do anything for them (apart from them only seeing a Vpn server and not your own ip address)
Vpn will help you with any blocks/throttling
It will also help cover your backside if they kept logs of all people connecting and were to be raided by the police or someshit but that's rare anyway and they aren't after the customers
its not just your provider, its happening all over and you should have vpn to protect yourself, read up on it.
EUFA and EPL and ISPs are pushing harder with blocks, believe me when i say its to protect you.
Consider that what you are doing is MOVING your trust relationship that you have with your ISP to the VPN provider. Do you trust your VPN provider to protect you?
When you connect to the provider with a VPN in a way, the provider is trusting your VPN provider like it or not. They probably trust the VPN provider more then Bell Canada internet, and that in part is probably the root of their request.

Not true most of the time a VPN is to bypass ISP blocks usually during football matches.
If you are in the UK all IPTV will not work while premier league is on. Maybe that provider is just telling everyone to get a VPN so he doesn't need to explain why it doesnt work without on weekends.
you won't get shut down from not using vpn. But vpn does give that extra protection.I have never seen one where it is a requirement, but every one/service is different,don't hurt to be extra safe.
