Am I shooting too high here?

Ok I read through the rules and as googled around, unless I’m breaking rule 14 I think I’m good.

Basically what I’m looking for is to setup an IPTV with scheduled recordings. Is it even possible? I work nights, as it is now, I record the sporting events I want, or I subscribe to them each individually like MLB and NHL.

So is it even possible to do that? Before I leave for work, hop on to my IPTV and schedule a record on a specific channel for later that night? If so, is it a specific box I need, does the provider matter? At this point I’m using Tivimate on chromecast and I can’t accomplish this.

Thanks for any advice, hopefully I didn’t break rule 14 and I’m definitely not advertising or selling anything.

It's doable, but not very reliably. IPTV streams can tend to be a bit glitchy and the glitches can cause the recording to either abort or to put crap in the recording that screws up playback. It's going to depend on how good the streams are that you get from your provider. In my case it's about 30% that I get the whole show.

My setup is Tvheadend running on a Linux box in the basement, using Kodi as the front end on Google TV or Nvidia Shield over wireless. It works great and you can schedule stuff by event, time or more intelligent criteria. It's great being able to access everything from any screen in the house, including recordings (when they work).

If anyone is having better success I'd love to hear about it.

Edited to add: As an added benefit you can also use the comskip addon to automatically skip commercials on your recordings :) Good luck.

im going to allow this post as long as there no talk about providers, thanks

I record all of the time using Nvidia Shield Pro with added storage & Tivimate premium. You can schedule recordings to repeat on any day of the week that your shows are on. This is done through custom recording. I would say 90% of my shows record all of the way through. Sometimes they record all of the way through, but I’m unable to ff/rw through commercial’s.

Need a computer server. Hook up xteve with your provider and then hook up xteve to an app such as Plex, channels, Emby

I run mine on a Rasp Pi with TvHeadend, lets me schedule, record, live pause etc. Sometimes the recordings fail, but thats just life with recording IPTV, sometimes the streams suck. But running TvHeadend depends on your provider as well, most these days dont allow you to use anything but shitty apps.

Tivimate has scheduled recording. When you see a program you want to record long click OK on it and go to "Record". It will then record that program. The issue with devices that have low storage like the Chromecast is that you will run out storage quickly, so you really need to set up an external way to record. If you have an "always on" Windows or PC computer on the same internet network as your Chromecast with GGTV is you can set up SMB recording to a folder on the computer and access that from within Tivimate (in Recordings) for playback.

There is an instruction video for Windows computers explaining how to do this.

In addition, some of the providers have what is called Catch-Up. It allows you to go back in time and play any program that has aired over a set period of time (say, 2 days or 5 days) on the channels that have the Catch-Up feature. The channels with Catch-Up will have a clock symbol next to the channel information in Tivimate's TV guide. No talk about providers here, but if you are looking for one that might be a must-have feature in your case as it makes the need for recording virtually obsolete.

You need storage. A place to put the recordings. A Chromecast has no storage/virtually none when it comes to video.

Why not just use a service that has good catchup, it will give you the same ability, retrospectively and without any storage needed on your end.

I use firestick cube and tivimate with my provider . I found the firestick not powerful or enough storage . Also use 5ghz channel for router. The only issue is fat32 only records 83 mins/4gb limit @ 720p. I can link to computer using ntfs which can help.

Channels DVR is an excellent choice for DVR software. They added ‘custom channels’ (M3U as a source) to their HDHomeRun and TV Everywhere support a while ago.

Though I would echo other comments about the stability of the streams from a typical IPTV provider. Expect a notable proportion of your recordings to be ‘bad’ through no fault at your end. Sometimes the recording can be salvaged with some work, but it’s far from a given. No tool can resurrect a truncated stream that ceased part-way through a show.
